Most Gender History studies start with a literature review focusing on the cultural and societal roles of both sex from antiquity till either the industrial revolution or the 1930s
This offers the premise on what everything else will be based upon and can include various research collected from art, paintings, cave carvings, old church documents, books, religious texts etc in order to develop a better picture of what gender roles were.
After 1930, gender history focuses on the 'liberty' of women, as they became even more involved in socio-political movements, gained the right to vote etc.

Gender history is a
sub-field of gender studies and history. It looks at the
past from the view point of gender. In many ways it has originated from women's
history. It takes into consideration the ways in which historical
events and periodization have a different impact on women in comparison to men.
Women's History describes her role, and examines the evolution of
historical writing related to women and gender from the 1930s till the early
twenty-first century.
