Cyber bullying (including public shaming, such as trying to shame anyone who has ever looked at porn), scams, piracy, intentional spread of viruses. All of those can be equated to non-internet crimes however.

Cyber bullying and public shaming is the same outside the internet as on but while online it can be spread faster and harder to escape. When kids at school bully a classmate, that ends when the child goes home. But in modern times, that harassment follows them 24/7. Scams are fundamentally the same as before but it is easier to reach much more people. Piracy is just a new form of theft. Viruses are in most cases a form of digital vandalism. Crimes have stayed much the same in many ways but have only found a new home.

All that being said… hands down the most vile and malicious misuse of the internet is the same as before the internet. Human trafficking has used the internet to attempt to reach those vulnerable to the lies of traffickers. It has been used by traffickers to find one another across distances previously difficult or unlikely. The same advantages provided to legitimate businesses has been extended to the lowest of humanity.

We at least have the ability to raise awareness of the issue if human trafficking and other sexual crimes to a wider audience. It is the heightened awareness of issues such as this that makes people more aware of how common they are. Because of this, many people make the assumption that it is becoming more common. The sad truth is that predators went widely unhindered until more recent decades. Awareness of the signs and what to do has helped people identify and report abuse. It has also helped victims become aware that they are not alone and made coming forward more easy.
