Mitochondria is called semi autonomous cell organelle because it has its own protein synthesis factory containing 70s ribosomes, double stranded circular DNA and mRna.. So it is able to synthesise some of the proteins on its own and depend on the nucleus for the rest... Hence it is called semi autonomous cell organelle....

Hi friend,

Mitochondria is semi-automous because Mitochondria has its own DNA and Ribosomes so it can prepare its own proteins and some of the other activities. So it's semi-automous. Plastids are also semi-automous as they too have their own DNA and Ribosomes.

Hope it helps...!!
