MnO2 + 4HCl  MnCl2 + 2H2O + Cl2 (a) Name the compound (i) oxidised, (ii) reduced. (b) Define oxidation and reduction on its basis.

HCl is getting oxidised here..


Because the oxidation state of Cl in HCl is -1 whereas in Cl2 it is 0..


Hence HCl is oxidised by loosing an electron .


On the other hand reduction is the gain of electron..


Hence MnO2 is getting reduced here because The oxidation state of Mn has changed from +4 to +2
