sclerenchyma as seen in longitudinal section and label it. His figure is as shown. Find out the mistake he has made in the diagram.
(a) The pit pair is bordered not simple.
(b) The cell walls are not lignified in sclerenchyma.

The mistake made in the diagram is 'It is a transverse section and not the longitudinal section.'

  • The figure Mohit drew is the transverse section of sclerenchyma but he was supposed to draw a longitudinal section.
  • Sclerenchyma is a type of permanent tissue found in plants Permanent tissues are those that lose the power of cell division.
  • Sclerenchyma is made of long and narrow cells. Cells are usually dead and do not contain any protoplasts. The cell wall is thick and lignified with a few or numerous pits.
  • The secondary cell wall is highly thickened and has pits on it which allow the exchange of substances. The secondary walls are rich in lignin which is made of cellulose, hemicellulose and pectin. They possess narrow lumen due to the presence of highly thickened cell walls.
  • There are two types of sclerenchyma cells. They are sclereids and fibres.
