Seeds are both vehicles and suspects of pathogens and they may carry these as contaminations or as infections. Inoculation and establishment of infection of the host depend on (1) conditions favouring exposure of the seed to inoculum, (2) susceptibility of the successive stages in the development from ovule to mature seed, and (3) the microenvironment of the developing seed provided by the mother plant, such as the enclosure formed by fruits or by foliar envelopes of bracts.
