her life to the service of the 'Poorest of the Poor' as she believed that in serving the poorest, she was
serving the God.
Mother Teresa's real name was Agnes Bojaxhiu. She was born in Yugoslavia on August 27, 1910.
As a twelve years old, she decided to become a nun, and at 15, she joined the Order of Loreto nuns
in Ireland. There in that distant land, she would get the call to go to India. She arrived in 1929, to
become a teacher in a Loreto Convent High School. "I love teaching most of all,' she said. She devoted

years of her life to it. One day she heard the 'Voice of God,' asking her to leave the convent and
serve the 'Poorest of the Poor' of Kolkata. She was the universal symbol of sacrifice and hard work.
The world's highest honours were showered on her : The Padma Shri in 1962, Magsaysay Award,
the Noble Peace Prize in 1979 and the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian decoration in India. She
passed away on September 5, 1997. She was a part of the humane tradition of our country.
