Please read between the lines to get the answer.
It is clearly written that 6 elephants were walking towards the lake with 12 monkeys...etc.

So total no of animals are as follows:----
= 6 (elephants) +12 (monkeys)
=18

So, total no of animals going towards the lake are 18.

A bit of logic will easily solve this riddle.
