What are homologous series of carbon compounds? Write the molecular formula of two consecutive members of homologous series of aldehydes. State which part of these compounds determines their (i) physical and (ii) chemical properties.

1. Series of compounds in which the same functional group substitutes for hydrogen in a carbon chain is called a homologous series.

2. For example ,  all alkanes have similar structures with single covalent bonds and show similar chemical properties so they are grouped together  in a homologous series having formula CnH2n+2.

3. The two consecutive members of a homologous series are methane CH4 and ethane C2H6 .



a.  No. of carbons and hydrogen decides its physical properties.

b.  The functional group attached to it decides its chemical properties.
