Answer:

cows -13

Chicken -12

Explanation:

let no of cows be x and chicken be y

then

x + y = 25

4x + 2y = 76

or

4(25 - y) + 2y = 76

100 - 4y + 2y = 76

 - 2y = -  24

y = 12

Hence

x = 13

Given:

  • Total number of chickens and cows = 25
  • Total number of feet = 76

To Find:

  • The number of chickens and cows on his farm.

Solution:

let "x" be the total number of cows and be "y" be the total number of chickens.

Chickens have 2 legs and cows have 4 legs.

From the given data we can write that,

x + y = 25 → {equation 1}

4x + 2y = 76 → {equation 2}

We are using the first equation to find the value of "y".

⇒ x + y = 25

⇒ y = 25 - x

Now we will substitute the value of "y" in equation 2.

⇒ 4x + 2×(25-x) = 76 {multiplying the terms}

⇒ 4x + 50 - 2x = 76

⇒ 2x + 50 = 76

⇒ 2x = 76 - 50 {subtracting the terms}

⇒ 2x = 26

⇒ x = 26/2 = 13 {dividing the terms}

Now we will substitute the value of "y" in equation 1.

⇒ 13 + y = 25

⇒ y = 25 -  13 {subtracting the terms}

⇒ y = 12

The total number of cows = 13

   The total number of chickens = 12
