Mr. lamb and Derry both suffers from physical impairment but their outlook towards life is completely different.
Derry,14 yr old champ, half of whose face is burned has left him miserable.
he feels unwanted. he thinks people see to him as ugly devil and are afraid of him. he get infuriated wen someone sympathise with him. all this bad experiences have made him cynical, and he has developed a pessimistic attitude towards life.

on the other side , Mr. lamb is complete contrast to Derry. he doesn't let his physical abilities destroy his life. he is optimistic. he finds beauty and peace in everything. he is full of hope and even through his cryptic words he managed to bring about light of hope in Derry's life.

On the Face of It describes the human predicament and different sreactions to it  by different people. It's an obvious truth that reader comes to know i.e. both Mr. Lamb and Derry are two different sides of the same coin. Both suffer from handicap, but the way take look at it is entirely different. Though Mr. Lamb has lost one of his leg, he accepts his impairment and reconciles with it. He find beauty in nature leads a useful life. Even before dying he is able to bring about a change in Derry.

On the other hand, Derry succumbs to his handicap and lives an isolated detestable life.  With his scarred face he feels neglected and lonely in this hostile world, but when he meets Mr. Lamb, his attitude towards life takes a shift.
