Step-by-step explanation:

Solution : Let the required distance = 1 km

Time taken to cover 1 km at 12.5 km/hr

=

 \frac{1}{12.5} \: hour \:  =  \:  \frac{10}{125} \: hour \:  =  \:  \frac{2}{25} hour \\  =   \frac{2}{25}  \times 60 \: minutes \:  =   \frac{2}{5} \: minutes \:  =  \: 4.8 \: minutes \:

Time taken to cover 1 km at 15 km/hr

 =  \frac{1}{15} \: hour \:  =  \:  \frac{1}{15}  \times 60 \: minutes \:  = 4 \: minutes

Different in time taken = (4.8 - 4) minutes = .8 minutes

But actual different in time = (3 + 5) minutes = 8 minutes

Now, more is the difference in the time taken at two speeds, more is the distance.

So, it is a case of direct variation

=> .8 : 8 : : 1 : x

=> .8 × x = 8 × 1

x \:  =  \frac{8 \times 1}{8}  = 10

So,the required distance = 10 km.
