Mrs.Packletide became a little annoyed as she understood the fact that those who outsmart others can also be outsmarted.
When she gained a lot of publicity for killing a tiger, only Ms. Mebbin, discovered that Mrs.Packletide has killed the goat by shooting it and the heart attack killed the tiger. Ms. Mebbin then started threatening her to disclose the truth to Loona, Mrs. Packletide's rival. So, Mrs. Packletide was forced to give money to Ms. Mebbin so that her respect should not loose before anybody.
Even the villagers deceived her by making her kill a very old tiger, which died in fear due to hearing a loud Gunshot.
The villagers tried to connive Mrs. Packletide by deliberately ignoring the truth that they have conveniently provided a safe shooting for her and the tiger was not shot dead by her. They did this to get 1000 bucks.
'Connived at' in the above line means to disregard or turn a blind eye.
