Antibiotic Treatment

Most Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections are self-limiting; however, clinicians routinely treat pneumonia caused by M. pneumoniae with antibiotics. All mycoplasmas lack a cell wall and, therefore, all are inherently resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics (e.g., penicillin).

Mycoplasma is insensitive towards the penicillin. Because penicillin attacks to the cell wall and in mycoplasma cell is absent. Absence of the cell wall in mycoplasma is a characteristic feature.

Other important points about mycoplasma :-

1. Mycoplasma was discovered by Roux and Nocard.

2. They can grow in the synthetic medium (like fried egg colony).

3. Shape of the mycoplasma is not fixed thus, they are polymorphic.

4. They can survive in the absence of oxygen as well. It is a very special feature of mycoplasma.

5. DS linear DNA is present.

6. 70s ribosomes are found.

8. They are known as jocker of the plant kingdom due to the special feature of polymorphism.

9. They can infact the sieve tube in the plants.

10. Almost all the mycoplasms were saprophytic.
