Archaeopteryx was first described as the “missing link” between reptiles and birds because it looks like bird but have a many features of reptiles.

REPTILIAN FEATURE:

  1. Non-pneumatic bones
  2. Both jaws are strong, heavier and possess conical teeth, lodged in sockets .
  3. Hind limbs with 4 digits, three forward and one backward
  4. No pygostyle
  5. Cervical vertebrae are ten in number and 6 with ribs

AVIAN FEATURES:

  1. Bones of girdles and limbs were conspicuously bird-like.
  2. The skull was proportionately large, monocondylic
  3. The feathers were of delicate structure like modern birds.
  4. The feathers were present on the back of ulna and hand.
  5. Two clavicles are fused, and formed a U-shaped furcula.

EXTRA INFORMATION:-

  • Because it displays features common to both birds and non-avian dinosaurs, Archaeopteryx has often been considered a link between them.
  • Archaeopteryx lived around 150 million years ago — during the early Tithonian stage in the late Jurassic Period — in what is now Bavaria, southern Germany.
  • Archaeopteryx would have been able to fly without running first on the ground
