There has been a number of protest movements in India related to rivers. They have opposed the river projects because such projects made problems with displacement and harmed the nature.   The two most famous protest movements against river projects were, Narmada Bachaao Andolan by Medha Patekar and the Tehra Dam andolan. Both were immensely successful.
