There are five main modes of seed dispersal: gravity, wind, ballistic, water, and by animals. Some plants are serotinous and only disperse their seeds in response to an environmental stimulus.

Question -

Name the agents of seed dispersal.

Answer -

The agents of seed dispersal are- Wind, water, animals and process of explosion.

➢ Wind

Seeds that get dispersed by air are small and light in weight ,some seeds have wings or hair like structures that help them to float in air. For Example-Dandelion, cotton seeds, etc.

➢ WATER

Seeds that get dispersed in water are

carried away by the fruits that are spongy or

fibrous, so they easily float on water and get

transferred to different places. For E.g- coconut, lotus, water lily etc.

➢ ANIMALS

Seeds are dispersed through animals in different ways-

• Seeds with hooks or spines get attached to the fur of animals or clothes of human beings and thus are carried to distant places. Example: Xanthium (cockle bur),Tiger claw.

• Many fruits are eaten by animals and the seeds come out as droppings after the fruit is

digested. Examples: Guava, tomato etc.

• After eating fruits like litchi, peach, orange, mango, plum etc. the seeds are thrown away at different places by human beings and animals.

• Squirrels collect nuts and bury them to eat them afterwards. At times they forget the place where they had buried the seeds. When these seeds get favourable conditions, these nuts grow into new plants.

➢ EXPLOSION-

The pods of some fruits burst open after they ripen and the seeds are scattered at different places.Eg-pea, lady’s finger, poppy, balsam.
