The functional group of organic compounds that can be hydrogenated are ‘alkenes’ and ‘alkynes’ Hydrogen can be added to unsaturated hydrocarbons in the presence of nickel to yield saturated hydrocarbons. In this reaction, nickel acts as a catalyst. Onhydrogenation, the unsaturated fatty acids which are liquid at room temperature become saturated and change to solid. A natural source of organic compound that is hydrogenated is vegetable oil.
