Mitochondria are the power house of the cell. They (mitochondria) produce energy by breakdown of glucose. Therefore, the number of mitochondria in a cell is proportional to the energy demand of the cell. Tissues with higher energy requirement like red muscle and liver have a higher number of mitochondria. It is not clear which cells has the highest number of mitochondria. Both red muscle and hepatocytes have very high number of mitochondria, but published data is available only for the hepatocyte (>2000 mitochondria/hepatocyte).
