A single-celled organism has the ability to do all the work required for being alive because, in fact, being alive is actually a chemical process taking place in a membrane - a cell. The chemical process is basically combustion (burning fuel with oxygen to create the energy required to do the work). The cell finds food (fuel), oxygen, combusts and eliminates waste.
But some single- celled organisms found a way of making other cells do the work and they became multi-celled organisms for part of their life-cycle. Our species is one of these
