DATA ENCRYPTION converts the normal data into unreadable code. The encrypted data is referred to as CIPHER TEXT.  It cannot be read without DECRYPTION.

Encryption is the process of converting plaintext (readable text or data) into ciphertext (unreadable code). The data is believed to be encrypted after it has been converted. Decryption is the process of converting ciphertext to plaintext in the opposite direction.
