BECAUSE zinc and magnesium are reactive metals which can displace the hydrogen in the HCl and form metal chloride and hydrogen gas.

Solution: Thallium and gold are the two metals that do not react with the hydrochloric acid.

When hydrochloric acid is added to it or the metal is added to the HCl acid, it does not liberate hydrogen or does not dissolve in the acid.

Barium on the other hand dissolves in HCl but not in sulphuric acid.
