Nancy has a toy cut that she loves to hug. When she squeezed the cat, it will respond by crying. Nancy’s mother told Nancy that the cat is a living thing. Is she correct? Justify your answer.

As it's a toy it can't be a living creature. As it responds the squeezing every time by crying it can be concluded that the cat is most probably designed or programmed to cry(making specific sound and making specific pre-determined body movements). If it was a living thing it'd have definitely responded differently depending on its mood and other factors.

Nancy's mother is not correct for making Nancy believe that the toy or doll is not a non-living thing, but the Mother seems to be justified since it does teach Nancy to treat animals with care and to not strangle them by mistake and also Nancy may have been scared when the doll started crying and hence to not encourage the Nancy's imagination and to hopefully not to have her having nightmares.
