sodium is highly reactive element.if it is kept in air it can explosively react with oxygen to catch fire.pottasium also reacts with water vapour in the air and cause explosion...

Sodium and potassium are hygroscopic in nature which means they absorb moisture quickly and react with water vapour and reaction of this element with water is explosive in nature so they stored in kerosene to prevent contect of metal with moisture in air.
