What is the reason for the Jordans taking a long time to get to the house of the Slaters? What does it show about the two sisters' attitude towards each other?

The Jordans were busy getting a new black mourning for them, so they got late I reaching the Slaters. This shows that the two sisters, always tried to over shine each other, they were envious of each other.
