* Classification is important because it allows scientists to identify, group, and properly name organisms via a standardized system (Linnaeus Taxonomy); based on similarities found in the organisms DNA/RNA (genetics), Adaptations (Evolution), and Embryonic development

* It is important to also note that organisms are classified based on a variety of characteristics, not just physical appearances. For example, classifying alligators and crocodiles. They both have similar appearances and vary in looks depending on the region from which they come from.

Answer :-

Biological classification of organisms is needed because of the following reasons :-

  • More than 1.75 million species of living organisms have been discovered and described till date.

  • A large number of organisms are yet to be discovered and described.

  • Taxonomists estimate that there may be around 30 million species of living organisms of which the known number of species forms a very small percentage.

  • Any systematic study on a given animal or plant can be made easier only when the organism is identified as one belonging to a particular group of organisms which have some specific characteristic features.

  • The vast number of plant and animal species that have been identified and described, exhibit a great deal of variation in their form, structure, mode of life and various other aspects.

  • Unless the plants and animals are divided into discrete groups based on differences and similarities between them, it becomes practically impossible to study them.
