A redox reaction (oxidation redox reaction) is occurred.

First, ammonia reacts with chlorine and produce nitrogen gas and hydrogen chloride vapor.

Then, hydrogen chloride reacts with basic ammonia gas to produce ammonium chloride which is a solid white smog.

The reactions are:

2 Nh3 + 3 Cl2 ~~~~~~ N2 + 6HCL

6NH3 + 6 HCL ~~~~~~ NH4CL
