Generally plants cannot absorb nitrogen from the air. So farmers apply nitrogen fertilizers to the soil.

But plants like black gram, green gram, etc are leguminous plants. These types of plants have nitrogen fixing bacterias in their roots. These bacteria absorb atmospheric nitrogen directly from air and supply the plant with nitrogen.when these bacterias die the nitrogen mixes with the soil and the soil becomea fertile.

I think it's because green gram, bengal gram etc. are the part of legume family or are leguminous plants which have the ability of fixing atmospheric nitrogen into soil.
