Plants, in symbiosis with bacteria, use the nitrogen that the bacteria fix for them in exchange for sugars. Nitrogen is a triple bonded diatomic gas that is useless in the atmosphere and is broken down by bacteria in the soil to make it useful for plants. We then can eat those plants or eat animals that eat the plants.
