inert gas like nitrogen that won’t react with the hot filament, or a vacuum. An oxygen would react quickly with the tungsten causing a burnout. The inert gas (nitrogen) reduces the evaporation of the tungsten as the gas molecules make it harder for the tungsten to leave the filament. Thus, longer lamp life. Also having the same pressure inside and outside the glass envelope reduces stress in the glass.
