Lactic acid is a common and simple example of optical isomerism. The (+) enantiomer of lactic acid is found in muscle. The positions of the hydroxyl groups on the chiral molecules can be compared with glyceraldehyde to see if they are the D-enantiomer or the L-enantiomer.
