Explanation:

Molar mass Cu = 63.55g/mol

Molar mass CuO = 63.55+16 = 79.55

Mass of Cu in 5g CuO = 5*63.55/79.55 = 3.994g Cu - call this 4g Cu

% Cu in sample = 4/40*100 = 10%.
