For example,

 \Large \sf \frac{d^2x}{dy^2} + y + 4 = 0

Here in the above example you can clearly see there is one independent variable that is y

How y ?

It's because you can see in  \Large \sf \frac{d^2x}{dy^2} that x is dependent on y that means y is independent
