Diatoms .......cause they carry out photosynthesis which is the process of converting CO2 into organic carbon.
There are many classes of phytoplankton in the ocean. We generally break them into groups by size classes, for which diatoms and dinoflagellates tend to be some of the largest cells. The most abundant phytoplankton on this planet are of the genus Prochlorococcus. They are tiny cells, with highly streamlined genomes, that are generally adapted to the warm, stratified waters of the oceanic gyres. It has been speculated that this group makes upward of 50% of the oxygen in the atmosphere.
Diatoms are referred to as chief producers because they are large and capable of growing very fast when nutrients become available. Meaning they can fix a lot of carbon dioxide and make a lot of biomass rather rapidly (bloom). They are also heavy, so they tend to sink from the ocean's surface layer (where there is light) to the dark layers, where the organic matter that makes up their bodies is less likely to be broken down and returned back to carbon dioxide. This represents a net sequestration of carbon.
