Option D) Taxing without representation
"Our properties within our own territories shall [not] be taxed or regulated by any power on earth but our own." – Thomas Jefferson, July 1774
- Taxation without representation refers to a situation in which the general public is compelled to pay taxes to a government authority without having any influence on the policies of that government. The word has its genesis in a slogan of the American colonials against their British rulers: "Taxation without representation is tyranny
- On this day in 1765, the Stamp Act Congress convened in New York, and nine Colonies declared that the English Crown had no jurisdiction to tax Americans who were not represented in the British Parliament.
- Because they had no representation in Parliament, colonial assemblies criticised the measure and said the levy was unconstitutional. In addition, colonists were indignant at losing their right to a jury trial.
- Since the debt had been contracted on the colonies' behalf, they need to contribute to the cost of maintaining their security. After all, the colonies were considered to be a part of the British Empire, and Parliament reserved the authority to tax any and all citizens of the empire.
