Clean Delhi, Green Delhi is the slogan that is promoted by the Delhi government on a big level to make the city more greener and a great tourist attraction. Infact the capital city of Delhi is quoted as Green Delhi for its lush greenery scattered around the whole city that Delhi got from its colonial empire. The rows of green trees on the road side, well maintained green lawns and parks, beautiful green natural surroundings gave the capital the title of Green Delhi. Also making it the greenest city of India, and a great place to spend holidays with nature.Since time immemorial, Delhi has been a favoured place for green lovers and a haven for solitude lovers. Even today, when the whole city pulsates with the rhythms of modernity, you can easily find some serene sectors nestling under the amiable shades of Neem and Jamun. First the Mughals and then the British, fell in love with this princely state, and spend millions to beautify their territory. Sandstone monuments still held their head high amidst lush green sectors that add to the wonderful landscape. Delhi with its gardens and green spaces, with its high levels of income and with its avenues for employment attracts nearby 5 lakh persons by way of in-migration every year. This rapid growth of Delhi has resulted in enormous pressure on existing service infrastructure and a significant increase in all types of environmental pollution. In an attempt to counterveil the intention, Delhi government has taken many unbeaten initiatives, and today the national capital flaunts of being one of the greenest places of tourist interest.

If Delhi is to survive, it must be maintained clean and green. The water, air, land, and general pollution levels have gone beyond critical levels; only cleanliness and greenery can save Delhi.
Delhiites must ensure they become the real participants in this crusade against the dirt and squalor in true spirit. They must start the cleanliness drive from their own home and surroundings. Their zeal and enthusiasm for the cleanliness drive is useless, if their own homes and surroundings are unclean.
The next step after maintaining cleanliness is preserving the greenery. The need of the hour is conserving and preserving the environmental beauty and purity of the surroundings. This task is quite Herculean. The only solution to the critical environmental issues is people’s mass participation in saving the environment. Mass forestation drive, and stopping the use of fossil fuels altogether can solve this problem.
There are other alternative fuels available. The Delhi government must act strictly. There should be a ban on fossil fuels. The government must create forest belts around, across, and near Delhi. Toxic emissions of industries must be strictly regularized. Installation of toxic smoke and effluents treatment plants must be mandatory at every industrial unit. With these measures strictly and immediately implemented the environmental health will improve considerably. Unless the people come forward, this mission cannot be accomplished. They must minimize their carbon footprint. They must adopt eco-friendly ways of life. Government alone cannot do anything. People will have to act proactively.
If Delhiites succeed in implementing all the above mentioned measures, they will be the beneficiaries; the coming generations will be able to live in a purer and healthier environment. This will be their best gift to them. If they fail, the gradual degradation will result in grim and hellish consequences. May that day never come!
