Bengal was a very large state in British India. It include the present day West Bengal, Bangladesh, part of Bihar Odisha and Assam.
In July 1905, Lord Curzon, the viceroy of the British India announced that Bengal will be divided into two parts - eastern Bengal ( now Bangladesh) and Assam as many state and western Bengal, Bihar and Odissa as the other.
According to the British, it was difficult to manage such a large state. Also, towns and villages far away from Calcutta ( now Kolkata ) could get very little attention and hence very largely undeveloped. Therefore, the division of Bengal was necessary.
On 16th October 1905, Bengal was finally divided into two state. The Eastern part of Bengal had a large number of Muslims and the western part of Bengal had a large number of Hindus. Many Indian felt that the British square trying to divide people according to their religion and rule over them. Therefore, people protested against it and observed the day of partition as the day of mourning. The people of Bengal showed their Unity by fasting, tying Rakhi on each others wrists and singing patroitic songs in the street.
