In spite of such a development in science and technology, a large part of the word population is still illiterate. In India, the rate of illiteracy is as high as 40%. This is indeed alarming. Most of the problems in our country like unemployment and population explosion are a result of lack of education. Illiteracy is directly linked with problems like poverty, child labor, superstitions, exploitation of women, etc. Literacy helps a person to take advantage of the developments in science and commerce. One admirable step in this direction is the "Adult Education Program" implemented by the government to give education to school dropouts and even adults. Education has been made compulsory and free up to a particular standard in some states. However, the strongest hurdle in achieving full literacy is poverty that forces parents to send their kids to work rather than to schools; it is indeed a vicious circle. Education is a lifelong process and never ends but literacy is the basic knowledge of reading and writing that a person must have. Illiteracy is a national curse for any country and a major impediment in its progress. The government is doing its bit but we, the common people, can do more by increasing awareness and helping to spread the light of literacy in every town and village.
