There have been many social reformers in India who have worked for the betterment of society and have fought against the social evils. Some of them are:
Raja Ram Mohan Roy 1772 - 1833 - He was from Bengal. He fought against the practice of Sati Pratha.
Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar - He was born in 1820. He was from Bengal. He worked to uplift the status of women. He supported widow remarriage. He contributed a lot in the field of education.
Vivekananda - He was born in 1863. He was from Bengal. He was against religious dogmas and superstitions.
Swami Dayananda Saraswati - He was born in 1824. He was from Gujarat. His slogan was 'Return to Vedas'. He argued against the wrong things which were being propagated in the name of religion. He believed that caste system should not be based on birth. It should be on the basis of occupation. He started a campaign against untouchability and child marriage.
Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar - He was born in 1891. He was from Mhow, a town in the Central Province of India. He fought for the rights of the untouchables.
Jyotiba Phule - He was born in 1827. He was from Maharashtra. He supported women's education and widow remarriage. He was against child marriage and untouchability. He used the word dalit for untouchables.

Raja Ram Mohan Roy
Born into a Brahmin family in Bengal, Raja Ram Mohan Roy is remembered today for the Atmiya Sabha and Brahmo Samaj institutions that he set up. He fought against many social evils such as Sati, child marriage, polygamy, untouchability, and caste system.
Annie Besant
Annie Besant was an Irish woman. But, her love for India and Hindu philosophy made her adopt this country as her second home. She was against women not being given equal status and importance as men. Needless to say, she was a women’s rights activist and fought for women empowerment.
Swami Dayananda Saraswati
Swami Dayanand Saraswati was a native of Gujarat and is known even today for the Arya Samaj that he set up. He fought against social evils like ritualism, idol worship and animal sacrifice.
