There are three types of soil water. They are capillary water, gravitational water and hygroscopic water.

Capillary water

Capillary water is the main water which is available to the plants because it is trapped in the soil solution just next to the roots of the plants. It is held in the micropores of the soil. It composes the soil solution. It is held in the soil because the cohesion and adhesion of the soil micropores is stronger than the force of gravity. But when the soil dries up the size of the pores increases and capillary water turns into gravitational water due to gravity and starts moving down.

Gravitational water

Gravitational water is water which moves through the soil by the force of gravity. It drains rapidly and is not available to the plants.

Hygroscopic water

Hygroscopic water is not available to the plants. It is found on the soil particles and not in the pores.
