mycorrhiza is the fungal association with the roots of higher plants .
it colonises the root and helps the plant to absorb water and minerals from the soil while plant supports its survival .mycorrhiza also protects the plant from root borne diseases

Reason why Pinus seeds cannot germinate and establish without the presence of mycorrhiza:

The term mycorrhiza denotes the association that exists between the root of pine tree and the fungal species. As the Pinus tree are grown in very colder region, the source of water required for their growth is snow rather than rain water.

For the germination of seed, the plant requires water, mineral and required amount of light. In order to obtain nutrients and minerals from the water, the Pinus tree root system is associated with fungi. The fungi increases the water absorbing capacity of the pine roots whereas the pine tree in turn provides nutrient required by the fungi for its growth and development.
