Some nitrogen fixing bacteria like Rhizobium bacteria are present in the root nodules of leguminous plants. These bacteria fix atmospheric nitrogen into water soluble nitrogen compounds , called , nitrates which can directly be absorbed by plants.
This also helps in making the soil fertile by enriching it with nitrates, which the plants can absorb more efficiently.
