Antonio was a merchant living in Venice. Antonio and Bassanio were good friends. Bassanio liked a very rich young woman named Portia who lived in the town of Belmont. Bassanio wanted to marry this young lady but this could be possible only if he becomes rich. Antonio wanted to help his friend. So, he decided to borrow three thousand ducats from a very rich Jew whose name was Shylock but Antonio had to return the borrowed amount within three months. If Antonio failed to do so, Shylock would cut a pound of flesh from Antonio's body. Antonio felt that he can repay the amount in the stipulated period of time because some of the ships laden with cargo would return within three monthes.
