Deserts are completely dry regions where the availablity of water is insufficient. In deserts the climate is also hot and humid and due to this type of climate, water is necessary but there is insufficient water.
And thus agricultural Us not possible. So canal, and dams etc. are built in deserts which helps in the time of drought and when the water level goes too down and provide water useful for farming.

desert are water less and there is no water so we cant do the agriculture and cant get food so by the canal the soil get water and we can do agriculture
