Answer: Simple harmonic motion, in physics, repetitive movement back and forth through an equilibrium, or central, position, so that the maximum displacement on one side of this position is equal to the maximum displacement on the other side. The time interval for each complete vibration is the same.

Following are the main characteristics of simple harmonic motion:

1) In simple harmonic motion, the acceleration of the particle is directly proportional to its displacement and directed towards its mean position.

2) The total energy of the particle exhibiting simple harmonic motion is conserved.

3) SHM is a periodic motion.

4) SHM can be represented by a single harmonic function of sine or cosine.
