Louisa Mebbin who was Mrs. Packletide's paid companion would adopt a protective elder-sister attitude when it came to the issue of money. She was of a stingy disposition and would often stop her employer from dispensing with excess cash when the latter way swayed to do so. It was her energetic intervention which had helped so far.
