The British had first established relations with the Mughals during the reign of Jahangir, the fourth Mughal Emperor. Jahangir had inherited one of the largest and most prosperous of empires in the world, accounting for 1/4th of the entire world’s GDP at the time.

Two ambassadors of King James II arrived at Jahangir’s court in 1612, asking for perimission to set up a factory at Surat. The British East India Company at this time had already been formed by the end of the sixteenth century. In fact, the Portuguese had been here to trade even before but soon incurred Jahangir’s wrath when they began to indulge in piracy. Later, in 1686, Aurangzeb ordered his troops to attack the British troops stationed in Chittagong when the British refused to accept the Mughal’s indifference of Sir Hedge’s proposal for extra trade concessions.
