Thus the combined mass is 4

Solve for x
238−4x−238=206−238(Subtract 238 from both sides )
−4x=−32

Look at this image and you would see there are some beta decays too but that doesnt interfere the equation since beta decay doesnt change the mass but the number of protons.And in the equation we have not used the number of protons but the masses of the elements which are not changed. If we did the equation with number of protons the answer would be surely wrong.

before seeing the solution,read the following information
1)1 alpha particle consist of 2 unit positive charge and 2 unit neutron
so,mass of 1 alpha particle=4amu
2)1 beta particle consist of one electron......
now ,in this question
decrement in mass =286-222=64
since the mass is totally dependent on alpha
and we know 4amu=1alpha
4×n=64
n=16
so 16 alpha particles will be emmited
total beta particle emmited=change in atomic no. =26
