Let the total number of camels = x.

Given that one-fourth of a herd of camel lives in a forest = x/4  ----- (1)

Given that Twice the square root of the herd = 2 \sqrt{x}   ---- (2)

Given that number of remaining camels  = 15.  ---- (3)

On solving (1),(2),(3), we get

 \frac{x}{4} + 2 \sqrt{x} + 15 = x

x + 8 \sqrt{x} + 60 = 4x

8 \sqrt{x} = 4x - x - 60

8 \sqrt{x} = 3x - 60

On Squaring both sides, we get

8x = (3x - 60)^2

8x = 9x^2 + 3600 - 360x

9x^2 - 424x + 3600 = 0

9x^2 - 324x - 100x + 3600 = 0

9x(x - 36) - 100(x - 36) = 0

(9x - 100)(x - 36) = 0

x = 100/9 (or) x = 36

There should not be a fraction. So x = 36.

Therefore the number of camels = 36.

Hope this helps!

JessicaMalik: How did we get x/4+2rootx+15=x

Let the no. of camels bex
No. of camels seen in the forest 4
No. of camels gone to mountains 2vx
No of camels on the bank of river-15
