Question -

Two unequal mass {\sf m_1\: and \: m_2} are connected by a string which passes over a frictionless pulley as shown in fig. If {\sf m_1 \: , m_2} and table are frictionless the acceleration of the masses.

Given :

  • Two mass unequal {\sf m_1 \: and m_2}

To Find :

  • Acceleration of the masses (a)

Solution :

Refer to the Attachment for Diagram.

T = Tension

\implies{\sf T = m_2 a \: \: \:-(eq\: 1)}

\implies{\sf m_1g - T = m_1a \; \: \: (eq\:2) }

From Equation 1 and Equation 2

\implies{\sf m_1g - m_2a = m_1a}

\implies{\sf m_1g = m_1a + m_2a }

\implies{\sf m_1g = a(m_1+m_2)}

\implies{\bf a = \dfrac{m_1g}{m_1+m_2)}}

Answer :

Option (A) {\bf a = \dfrac{m_1g}{m_1+m_2}}
